My Ming aralia

I once worked at a plant store. That is where I got this lovely Ming aralia. There were retail plant stores  around here from about 1970-85. This Ming aralia has been with me now for thirty+  years!

It's my oldest plant. It was about 12" high when I first acquired it and has grown easily through the years. Its soft loveliness may make it appear fragile but it is really quite sturdy. Of course, the right recipe for it's proper care always helps. If it does have a setback, it can always recover beautifully. It is a lesson in graciousness.

Although Araliaceae is a family of plants and there are several varieties sold with the name Aralia, its official botanical name is Polyscias. The Ming aralia's botanical name is Polyscias fruticosa.  An evergreen, native to Polynesia and India, it is often used as a hedge plant there. As an indoor plant, it stands alone with grace.

Care Instructions:

  • Some direct sun or strong indirect light.
  • An Aralia in an 8"diameter container should be watered with a quart (about 1 liter) of water when ready.
  • An Aralia in a 10"diameter (25cm) pot can take 2 quarts or almost 2 liters of water when necessary.
  • An Aralia in a 14" diameter  (35cm) will take about 1 gallon or almost 4 liters of water.
  • A daily mist of water can be helpful in order to provide extra humidity if your place has low humidity.
  • Fertilize regularly for best growth.

  1. Plants maintain balance in ecosystem. They also help to purify the air that we breathe. They help to fight global warming by maintaining the global temperature to save us from scorching heat. They also cool down the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upward through their leaves. https://www.hedgesonline.com
