I learned to truly appreciate these life forms. My goal was to find out how to keep them healthy and beautiful. Now I can share each plant's own unique instructions. As I go along in life, I'll sometimes take a picture of a plant I see, and let you in on all the specific secrets about that indoor plant.

She recently bought several at a local plant store. This small and sweet slice of life was sitting on her kitchen counter.

It's called a Wire vine or Maidenhair vine. With tiny soft green leaves on creeping, twining reddish-brown stems, this smallish plant can add a touch of freshness wherever it is placed. It can be pruned as needed to keep it compact. It should divide quite easily if it's root-bound and you still want a small plant.

This is one of the 'forgiving' plants, as I call them, meaning they can recover from setbacks beautifully. His picture of the Zamioculcus zamifolia, an African native, is different and shows a plant similar to this with more yellow showing in its veins.

If I ever find out for sure, I will list this plant's official last name. Quite a long time ago, one of its common names was Painted droptongue!

What is most helpful to a plant owner is how to care for it so that it will live with you for a long time. The family of Chinese evergreens has the reputation of being among the hardiest of houseplants. With regular good care they rarely have problems. If their care is off-track for awhile, they usually recover well.

My friend, Suzy, graciously allowed me to take this picture of her plant when I stopped by for a visit.

Care Instructions:
consistent attention.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the largest-leafed English Ivy variety that I've seen sold as a houseplant. This is the very handsome variegated Algerian Ivy and it is quite easy to grow. It can be grown as a hanging basket or kept trimmed as a shelf plant.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Its botanical name is Hedera canariensis 'Variegata' and naturally lives in the Western Mediterranean, in North Africa, the Azores, Canary Islands and Madeira.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This Algerian Ivy was awaiting its new home at the lovely florist below. You can send indoor plants and floral arrangements just about anywhere in the world from this florist:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Care instructions--

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Prefers bright indirect light or some direct
morning sun. Full afternoon sun will bleach the leaves. Its new leaves
will be smaller in low light.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Water thoroughly when the
soil surface is good and dry on top.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A plant in a 6" (15cm) diameter
pot should be watered with about a pint (or almost a half liter) of
water

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A plant in an 8" (20cm) diameter pot or 10" (25cm) diameter hanging basket, will use about a quart of water, when necessary.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Regular fertilizing keeps them looking robust.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If
they are trimmed back some, from time to time, you will have a fuller,
lusher looking plant. Every few months, cut a few of the vines back a
little, just below a leaf.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Longer vines can be cut back to the length you desire.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Propagation--

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the easiest way: Stem
cuttings root very easily in water and can be planted in potting soil
when the roots have grown to be about 2" long or longer.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the Peruvian Old Man cactus, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Espositoa lanata, not to be confused with The Old Man cactus, Cephalocereus senilis. The old man cactus has stiffer "hairs" that stick out and give it a more unkempt appearance in contrast to the soft whispiness that surrounds the Peruvian Old Man cactus.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I spotted this sitting on the windowsill while visiting my friend and plant-appreciator, Suzy. at her house the other day. It is growing well in its own naturally amusing way. She's had for a long time in great light and allows it to dry out thoroughly before watering it.That's the recipe for successful cacti growing!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This living wonder with its snow-white cottony hair is indigenous to Columbia and Peru. It will eventually grow to about 3 ft. (or 1 meter) high. I will have to remember remember to let Suzy know that.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A moisture meter for indoor plants van be a great way to monitor when your plant will need water. The meters should

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was out visiting my friend, Suzy, who has a great appreciation for plants. Her mom is an avid African Violet fan. We talked about how African Violets are easiest to care for in front of a north-facing window. If one doesn't have a windowsill facing north, it can be a little tricky to find just the right spot where an African violet will thrive.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Suzy does not have a north-facing window so hasn't grown any African violets. Fortunately, she was able to find just the right place in her home for this Streptocarpus in a hanging basket. During the summer, it lives in the shade under the eaves of her shed. The rest of the year, it hangs in a room with large windows and plenty of bright indirect light.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many nurseries and garden centers will carry different varieties of Streptocarpus. This one, the Streptocarpus caulescens is one of the easier ones to keep indoors. Its soft green foliage and lovely flowers make a beautiful hanging basket.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Like African violets, the Streptocarpus is part of the Gesneriad family of plants. Sometimes known as Cape primroses, I've usually seen Streptocarpus' labelled for sale with their botanical name, not a common name.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These enchanting, soft and fuzzy-leafed plants are native to East Tropical Africa.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Right in front of a north-facing window is the best place for them.
Otherwise, very bright indirect light or a place with some morning sun, works too.
Direct afternoon sun is too strong for these plants.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Water thoroughly as soon as the top is dry. A plant in a 10" diameter hanging basket will take about 1 quart or 1 liter of water, when ready.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fertilize with African violet food regularly. Schultz Instant African Violet Plus works beautifully.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This graceful Aralia Balfouriana 'Roseleaf' is over 40 years old! As it has grown its branches have taken on curves and twists giving it an asymmetrical and intriguing shape. I think of it as a living sculpture.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is potted in a 14" diameter pot. Its been in that same size pot since 1991! Every few years I prune off some of the roots and foliage and add some fresh potting soil. Aralias truly don't mind staying pot-bound, as you can see. They are a wonderfully easy houseplant to keep. I believe the most important thing to keeping them thriving is to water them thoroughly when the top of the soil is dry. They appreciate a good soak.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Its botanical name is Polyscias paniculata 'Variegata''. Most Polyscias species are sold as Aralias, their horticultural name. This Aralia Balfouriana 'Roseleaf" is native to Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Care Instructions---

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bright
indirect light to some direct sun. Full afternoon sun may prove to be
too strong. Directly in front of a north or east facing window will
work out well.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For all Aralias: Water when the top of the soil is dry. They like a good soak but not to sit in water for long.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">in a 6" (15 cm) diameter pot, water with 1 pint of water (almost 1/2 liter)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">in a 10"(25 cm) diameter pot will use about 2 quarts of water (or 2 liters) when necessary

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">in a 14" (35 cm) diameter pot, use 1 gallon of water (almost 4 liters)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fertilize regularly for best growth.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Misting daily with water would be appreciated but is not necessary.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once
in awhile clean the leaves in the shower or outdoors with a hose on
gentle spray. You can mix up about a tsp. of mild dishwashing soap in a
pint bottle and soap up the leaves first.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This Parsley Aralia was just picture-perfect and awaiting its new owner that will walk into this florist, sooner or later. This graceful and easy to grow plant is at a stage of growth where it would be best as a table plant but it can become a showy and elegant floor plants as it grows up.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This one is great for a narrow space and does not grow nearly as wide as many other floor plants. I own a few Aralias, one is over forty years old now, and rarely have had trouble with them. The secret to keeping them going is to give them a good soak when they need water and find a bright indirect or fairly sunny spot for them.

As I walked into the florist, this splendid Birdnest fern was sitting on the the penny floor right next to the front door. If growing ferns interests you, the Birdnest fern is one of the easiest ferns to keep indoors. I'd really recommend this for a beginner.

It's called a Birdnest fern because its center crown looks very much like it could be a home for birds, although in miniature. It has stiffly spreading fresh green leaves that emanate from its center. The fronds can eventually grow 3 feet (or 90cm) long so make sure you'll have the space for it. !t will take a few years, at least, for this one to grow that large. It will happen, though.

Its botanical name is Asplenium nidus and if you are walking through Queensland, Australia or parts of Japan you just may happen upon on one growing naturally there.

You can send plants or floral arrangements as a gift, almost anywhere in the world from this great florist:

Flowers and Plants Etc.

They have bloomed from January to July this year. If they are given regular care those flowers will last! <span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif"> <span style="font-family: "arial";"> Care Instructions:

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Because of the bark media that they grow in, I've
found the best way to water orchids is, first put them in the sink. A good thorough soak
will make sure they are evenly watered. Let the water drain for a few minutes. Watering this way makes a big difference.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">You can also spray their leaves
when you do this, keeping them clean and giving them some instant
humidity. It's best to let them dry out about 1/2" from the top of
the media before watering. I do prefer using touch rather than time
to decide when plants are ready to be watered.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">If
you keep the temperature in your house below 70°F (or 21°C) in the
winter, you shouldn't have to be concerned about the humidity levels,
although a daily mist would always be appreciated. If your house
temperature is over 70°F (or 21°C )in the winter, and if you keep your
air conditioning below 75°F (or 24°C), you may want to place your orchid
on a tray with pebbles in it and keep water in the tray just to the top
of the pebbles so that the plant is not sitting in water. The
evaporating water and a daily mist will definitely help.<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Fertilize
them regularly, African violet food works well, as does a plant food specifically for orchids. You can use a specific
orchid fertilizer or a general houseplant food, which works well, too.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">This is a tall and lovely palm that can bring some peacefulness to your home. There is something about palms that is so soothing. With just the right care the Majesty palm can grace a space for years.
<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Palms can be dust collectors so it would be wise to own a feather or microfiber duster to gently use on it once in awhile. From time to time, a gentle shower with a garden hose outdoors or in the shower indoors would be helpful.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The cyclamen has become a traditional Christmas houseplant. Its abundance of blooms in wintertime are suited perfectly for the holidays.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Last year was the first time I ever saw a hybrid of this very lovely plant and I was delighted. Its flowers appear fluffier and its heart shaped leaves are more frilly around the edge than the original plant. With the right care, it should continue blooming through the winter.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Full Care Instructions--

<span style="font-family: "arial";">It
requires direct sun to do its very best. It will tolerate less than
that for a week or so, if you have a special place that you would like
to show it off, during the holidays.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Water
it as soon as the top feel dry. If it is in a 6"(15cm) diameter pot it
should take about 2 cups (about 1/2 liter) of water. <span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"> If it wilts on you ,don't worry, just put it in the
sink and thoroughly soak it, then let it drain for a few minutes. It
will perk back up.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">It does seem to appreciate some humidity which a daily misting can help provide, especially if your place is quite warm.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">After it stops blooming, fertilize it regularly until the end of April.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">As
the weather becomes warmer, it should start looking forward to a
dormancy period. he hot weather is a signal to the cyclamen, that it is time for a
rest. You can water it less and less and let it "die" back by until the
end of June or so.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">The pot can then be stored in a dark, cool place such as the basement or even the refrigerator, for a few months.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Do give it a little water from time to time.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Around
the end of September you can bring it out, then soak it thoroughly, put it in a sunny window and it should start
growing again. Fertilize it regularly and you should have a lovely
blooming cyclamen by Christmastime. <span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've rarely seen this palm for sale although its relatives should be easy to find. This is Chamaedorea (pronounced sham a dorea) metallica. It is related to the easy-to-grow Bamboo palm and Neanthe Bella Palm. It's commonly known as a "Miniature fishtail palm" and if you look at its leaves for just a moment, it should be easy to figure out why it was given that name.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This sturdy and calm-green palm is a Mexican native and just about the smallest palm you can buy. It grows slowly and will only grow to a height of about 3 feet (1 meter) or so. From time to time, you should see it produce an unusual-looking cluster that is its flower and fruit. The Miniature fishtail palm is a great choice for a beginner who is interested in learning to cultivate plants from the relaxed Palm family.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is another palm that is called a Fishtail palm, too, botanically known as Caryota mitis. (I'll talk <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">about that one on another day.)<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Common names of plants aren't always a reliable way to find what you are looking for.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Some plants may have different common names in different areas of the world.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was delighted to find this palm, which I've rarely seen, at one of my favorite florists. You can send plants and floral arrangements almost anywhere in the world from:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bright
indirect light or some morning sun is just right. Too much afternoon
sun will bleach out the leaves. It will tolerate low light for quite a
while.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Water
when the top of the soil is dry about 1/2" down in 6"(15cm) diameter
pot. Let it dry out a little more in a plant that is in a 10" (25cm)
diameter pot.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For a plant that is in a 6" (15cm) diameter container, water with about a pint or half liter, when necessary.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A Miniature fishtail palm in a 10" diameter (25 cm) container should use about 2 quarts or almost 1 liter of water, when necessary.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They would appreciate a daily misting but adapt very well to normal house humidity.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An occasional dusting and cleaning with fresh water is helpful.

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">I have been working today on You Tube and just posted a clip on the glorious Yucca. I realized that I've not yet written about this sturdy and handsome houseplant. It's very easy to grow this plant, if you have a place for it that receives very bright indirect light or direct sunshine. Yuccas are a wonderful choice as a houseplant for someone who is just beginning to grow and appreciate plants indoors.

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">It's also a great choice for someone who does not have a lot of time to devote to plant care. A large specimen will not need water often. They are slow growers so you won't have much concern about repotting them since the need for that rarely happens.

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">The Yucca species that is grown as a houseplant is botanically known as Yucca elephantipes. They can be naturally found in the United States in southern California as well as along the Carolina coasts and Florida. Yucca species are also indigenous to parts of South America and Central America.

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">There is a species that landscapers use here in the Washington, DC area. It grows well and blooms with a large spike of white bell-shaped flowers in the summer. You shouldn't try to grow your the houseplant Yucca outside, if it freezes in your area. It is not winter hardy. It is possible though, for it to bloom indoors with a large spike of white flowers, but I've not seen that for myself, yet.

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">Care Instructions:

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">At least some direct sun is best. Yuccas can sit in front of a window with full sun and thrive. They are tolerant of bright indirect light for awhile. If the new growth is not as sturdy and deep green as the older growth, it probably needs to be moved to a sunnier location. .

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">For a 6" (15cm) diameter
pot, water when the soil is dry about 1" (2.5cm) below the soil surface with
about a pint (1/2 liter) of water

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">For an 8"diameter pot,
water when the soil is very dry up to about 2" (5cm) below the soil surface with
about a quart (almost 1 liter) of water

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">For a 10" diameter pot, water when the soil is dry up to 3" (cm) inches below the soil surface. If it's very dry on top, it can be watered. Use 2 quarts or almost a liter of water when it's ready.

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">Fertilize regularly for best growth

<span style="font-family: "arial", "helvetica", sans-serif;">Soil moisture meters made
to test the moisture level of an indoor plant's soil are readily available
at your hardware store, nursery or garden center.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is an outstanding specimen of a Sago Palm, sitting regally, at Flowers and Plants Etc. Sago palms certainly deserve a lot of respect as plant elders. It is said that they have lived on earth since <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">dinosaur times. Although not a true palm, they do have fronds that unfold and appear palm-like. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Their fronds are <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">a quite stiff and a deeply peaceful green.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sago palms grow slowly, forming a trunk that could eventually reach 10 ft. or 3m high.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> that would take many years indoors.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> It will produce a few new fronds, all at one time, every year or so.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These are quite hardy houseplants<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> and can also be used well as a patio plant or for a winter garden. They can survive temperatures as low as 15°F or -10C<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">. Just don't forget to check and see<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> if they need watering during the winter.

It's the time of year for your houseplants, when they should be coming in from the outdoors and returned to the house. Almost all houseplants can withstand temperatures down to about 45°F (7°C), so keep an ear out for night time temperature predictions below 50° F (10°C). Then bring them indoors.

The week or so before bringing your indoor plants inside is a great time to get them in good shape for the winter. Repot any plants that have outgrown their pots over the summer, add potting soil to any plants that need it and clip off dead leaves.

While they are outdoors, give them a thorough soil soak, by using about three times as much as water as usual, and then let them drain. This process is known as leeching. Not only will that help the roots but can also help flush away any insects in the soil. Leeching helps flush out any salt buildups that that can build up over time from water deposits and fertilizer. This is a good practice to do anyway, every year or so, for all your plants.
When returning them to the indoors, be sure to place your plants in the best light that you can provide for your specific plant. That will help guarantee the best results over the winter.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I saw this lovely custom made dish garden at one of my favorite florists. This one, which is made of ferns and moss, is an especially lovely reminder of the quiet of the forest.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ferns and mosses are among the plants that have lived on the earth for the longest time. As soft and vulnerable in appearance as they may seem, they do grow quite easily, recover well from setbacks, and propagate in nature, with ease.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A display like this can last for several months or so but should eventually grow to the point where it will have to be taken apart. Some of the plants could be put into pots or maybe one of the ferns and the moss will still fit together into the dish garden.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It can be an enjoyable craft to put a dish garden together. The secret to success with that is making sure the plants have the same light and watering requirements. Ferns and moss do, so this one should work out well.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Care Instructions:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bright indirect light or some morning sun is best. Direct afternoon sun will be too strong.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A dish garden needs to be carefully and evenly watered. Ferns and moss like to stay on the moist side so water when the top of the soil is dry.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Make sure the dish garden is not "swimming" in water but that is watered enough to soak all the way to the bottom of the container.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It may take a little experimentation in how much water to use but the plants will let you know if you are on the right track.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These plants appreciate humidity and a daily mist of water should help.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fertilize occasionally

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">The Fiddle Leaf fig can become a large and peaceful living presence in your home or office. It has wonderful large and shiny fiddle-shaped leaves that are quite sturdy and rigid. They seem to emanate a sense of safety. This is a relative of the old-time favorite, the Rubber Tree and another popular houseplant, the Ficus benjamina. It's a ficus, too, and its botanical name is Ficus lyrata or Ficus pandurata.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">I saw this on a visit to a beautiful florist and just had to snap a picture of this handsome and robust specimen. They are fairly easy to keep but will take awhile to look great again, if they are neglected and start losing leaves.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Many of the Fiddle Leaf figs you'll find for sale, are in large pots and so will not require water too often. I've found some of my largest plants only need a monthly watering!
